HUMBOLDT — Inconsistency was the greatest weakness for Humboldt High School Lady Cubs in their 55-28 loss to the Parsons Vikings.

As Humboldt struggled with shooting, Parsons senior guard Braelyn Hinman-Mitchell was a one-woman wrecking crew, scoring all but six of Parsons’ 22 first-quarter points and a team-leading 34 points.

“We knew they were going to have great athletes. We did not match up well with them tonight,” Humboldt coach Rob Myers said.

A pair of field goals by Humboldt senior Ricklyn Hillmon, who had a team-leading 12 points, as well as a 3-pointer by senior forward Laney Hull and a bucket by junior guard Lakyn Meadows kept the Lady Cubs in contention for the first quarter.

“The girls didn’t quit fighting, but it felt like there was a lid on the rim tonight,” Myers said. “Some of the girls who had clean looks, and usually hit their shots — it just didn’t happen tonight.”

In the second quarter the Lady Cubs posted five points on a 3-pointer by senior guard Skyler Hottenstein and free throws by junior forward Jo Ellison.

Field goals and a free throw by Hillmon and Ellison added up to five points in the third quarter. Hillmon scored her final field goal in the fourth quarter, along with a pair of free
throws.

Once Parsons pulled its starters, sophomore guard Addisyn Drake and sophomore forward Adalyn Hillmon posted three points from the free-throw line.

With the loss, the Lady Cubs’ record fell to 6-13 overall. With the postseason just around the corner, even non-conference wins may be a factor in seeding the upcoming regional tournament.

“We’re in a position in our regional rankings where we needed this win to put us in a better position,” Myer said. “It is what it is. We’re just going to have to fight now. We have to win these last four games and see what happens with our first-round matchup.”

Humboldt hoped to pick up their first Tri-Valley League victory Friday while on the road against Cherryvale. The final score was not available at press time.
