The Humboldt Lady Cubs celebrated a few milestones while taking third place at the Neodesha Volleyball Tournament over the weekend.

The Lady Cubs fell prey to a tiebreaker, which slotted them in third place despite tying the first and second place team with a 5-1 record in Saturday’s round-robin contest.

Humboldt opened the day with a 2-1 victory over Tri-Valley League foe Caney Valley.

Senior outside hitter Ricklyn Hillmon had a team-leading 14 kills, followed by freshman outside hitter Jadey Ellis with seven and senior middle hitter Laney Hull with five.

Senior libero Skylar Hottenstein had a team-leading three aces, followed by Hull and junior setter Lakyn Meadows with two each.

Hottenstein celebrated 2,000 career digs Saturday, including her 22 digs against Caney Valley, which tied Hull for the team lead, followed by Meadows and freshman defensive specialist Brynna Ellis with 10 each. Hillmon had a team-leading five blocks.

After losing to Humboldt earlier this month, Neodesha avenged their loss at their home tournament Saturday 25-20 and 25-12.

Hillmon put down six kills for the team lead, followed by Jadey Ellis and Hill with five each.

Sophomore setter Bailey Daniels, who also celebrated 500 career assists, had a team-leading three aces. Hottenstein had 11 digs, followed by Brynna Ellis with 10.

The Lady Cubs went virtually unblemished from there with a sweep of Baxter Springs, 25-19 and 25-12, who had been a thorn in Humboldt’s side after multiple tournament losses to the Lions earlier this season.

They swept the 4A Parsons Vikings 25-19 and 25-17, then former TVL foe Erie 25-6, 25-13.

The Cubs finished by sweeping the Southeast Lancers of Cherokee 25-14, 25-11.

The scores from Tuesday’s triangular against Eureka and Cherryvale were not available at press time.
