Lady Cubs hold their own against Girard

The Humboldt Lady Cubs put a scare in Girard before falling in both games of Friday's doubleheader.

GIRARD — The Humboldt Lady Cubs ended Friday’s trip to Girard with a pair of losses but not without a few fireworks in the finale.

After falling in the opener 3-0, the Lady Cubs sensed some hope when they went on a 6-2 run in the middle innings of the second game.

Girard’s Lady Trojans responded with a nine-run sixth inning  to secure the win.

The opening contest was a pitchers’ duel. Humboldt junior pitcher Jo Ellison took the loss, posting nine strikeouts over six innings, three runs on seven hits and four walks. Girard junior Jaycie Geier pitched a no-hitter with five strikeouts.

Humboldt’s hitting came on in the finale, but four errors proved too costly to overcome. 

After going scoreless for the previous nine innings, RBI singles by junior catcher Leah Carman and junior designated hitter Kamry De La Torre gave the Lady Cubs their first lead of the evening. De La Torre and Carman stayed hot in the fourth inning with Carman plating a pair of runners on a line-drive double, then De La Torre plating Carman and another teammate on a blooping single.

 In the fifth, a deep fly ball by Carman resulted in another pair of runs, and junior third baseman Hadlee Galloway plated De La Torre in the sixth with a line drive, but Girard then went on a
