MISSION HILLS — After struggling through the first 11 holes of his opening round of the Kansas Amateur Championship Tuesday, Iolan Kaden Macha closed with a flourish.
Macha birdied four of his last six holes of the Indian Hills Country Club golf course to finish with a 7-over-par 77.
Macha is the defending Kansas Class 4A champion. He struggled with a triple bogey on the second hole, and then double bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes to stand at 11-over.
But a par on hole 12 set up his blistering finish. Macha birdied holes 13, 14, 16 and 18.
Macha stands 11 strokes behind Wichita’s Pete Kranich, who fired a 4-under 66.
The tournament wraps up today.
Macha is entering his junior year at Iola High School.
