Allen County Kids Wrestling’s Mat Warriors competed in their own Mat Warrior Open tournament Saturday. The tournament drew over 250 contestants to the Iola High gym.
In the morning sessions, wrestlers 6-and-under, 8-and-under and 10-and-under competed. The afternoon session at 12-and-under, 14-and-under, high school and a girls’ division competing.
T.J. Taylor went 4-0 with three pins and a technical fall, 17-0, decision. Taylor took first in the 6-and-under 46-pound class. In another 6-and-under 46-pound bracket, Drake Mathew 0-3 and was fourth.
In 8-and-under, C.J. Shields was 0-2 and finished third in the 64-pound division and Gabe Berry was 0-2 for third in the 55-pound division.
Jeremy Ridge claimed second in the 8-and-under 67-pound bracket. He was 3-1 for the day.
Josh Wise was undefeated in three matches at 10-and-under 75 pounds taking first place.
Andrew Garber captured first in the 12-and-under 150-175-pound class, going 3-0. In the same bracket, Seth Sanford went 1-1 then had to default his last match because of an injury and finished third.
Taylor Stout and O’della Lohman wrestled in the girls’ division. Stout was third at 12-and-under 110 pounds and Lohman was third at 12-and-under 115 pounds. The two Allen County girls wrestled each other in an exhibition match.
Stephen McDonald was second in the high school division’s 189-pound class. He went 1-1.
The Mat Warriors go to the USA Kansas Kids Wrestling’s District I South sub-district tournament this Saturday at Pittsburg. Top four advance to the District I tournament March 19.
