Iola High’s Kyra Moore will be trading in blue and gold for red and black next volleyball season. Moore signed her letter of intent to play with the Allen Community College Red Devils next season.
“I know JP (Jessica Peters) and Whitney pretty well and I just love their coaching style,” Moore said. “They’ve helped me a lot already.”
Allen’s volleyball program works with the Allen County Aces volleyball club team. Moore has been on the team for five years and worked with ACC coaches Jessica Peters and Whitney Falkenstein.
Peters said she has known the Moore family through the volleyball club’s connection for multiple years. That connection has allowed Peters to watch Moore develop as a player.
“We also saw a lot of growth and development from her four years at Iola High School,” Peters said. “She, in conjunction with her teammates, got the team to the state tournament this year, which hadn’t been done in quite sometime. It says a lot about her as a leader on her program.”
The Fillies finished the volleyball season with a fourth-place finish at the Class 4A-II State Tournament. Moore was honored with her play this past season with a spot on the All-Pioneer League second team.
Moore said her favorite memory playing for Iola was making the state tournament team this season.
Moore played both as an outside hitter and setter for the Fillies, but will look to focus primarily as a setter for the Red Devils. Peters said she would be comfortable in the right side option.
“With her being left-handed, that’s a major plus for that right side hitting position,” Peters said. “But, her knowledge and background in setting is appealing to us. We aren’t returning one of our freshman setters from last year, so that position is open right away for someone to come in and play for it.”
Peters said Moore will be able to start practicing with the team in the spring because she will be taking concurrent classes through Allen.
The college game runs at a much faster pace. Peters said she will work with Moore to react faster and stronger. She said Moore is an athletic player, but will look for her to reach her full potential.
Moore said she plans to major in psychology. She wants to use this opportunity to get to a four-year school to continue her volleyball career.
“I guess I’m really coachable and will do whatever I need to do to become better,” Moore said.
