Mustangs medal at Kent Frazell Invite

Just ahead of their home opener Tuesday, the Iola Middle School kicked off the week by earning a few medals at the Kent Frazell Invitational in Chanute.

CHANUTE — The Iola Middle School Mustangs earned multiple gold medals while stepping up to face a few bigger schools at Monday’s Kent Frazell Invitational in Chanute. 

Ruben Scroggins, Milo Franklin and Jaxson Bernstein each took first, a propitious beginning for what they hope carries into Tuesday when Iola serves as tournament host.

Scroggins, 114 Ibs., took first with a first-period pin of Bakari Shaw of Fort Scott, then shaved off 37 seconds from his previous match while pinning Paxton Foreman of Independence in the first period and ended the day with a first-period pin of Chalin Gott-Bigpond of Chanute.

Milo Franklin, 145 Ibs., took first in a variety of ways. He opened the tournament with a first-period pin of Eureka’s Felix Neil, then won an 11-4 decision over Chanute’s John Fogle in the second round, and then won via forfeit from Avante Kendrex of Coffeyville. 

Jaxson Bernstein, 236 lbs., took first after pinning Chanute’s Brodjyei Blackwell of Chanute in the first period, then taking just 8 seconds longer against Lane Dunkeson of Fort Scott for the gold medal.

At 138 lbs., Ron Ballard took second when he opened the tournament with a loss to eventual champion Syncere Mosley via a first-period pin. Ballard rebounded with a first-period pin of Jeffery Fernandez-Calde of Coffeyville and wrapped up the evening with a second-period pin of Taysen Schaub of Fort Scott.

Kaiden Jones, 156 lbs., took second with a loss via a first-period pin to Knox Reinecke of Chanute but rebounded with a pair of consecutive first-period pins of Miles Villano of Parsons and Emmett Bryant of Independence.

Caleb Jankovich-Sette, 141 lbs., took second after defeating Carson Allen of Chanute via a 6-2 decision then tech-falling Cooper Stockton of Coffeyville 15-0, but ended the day with a loss after Gabriel Engleman of Chanute, who pinned him in the first period.

Daegen Rodriguez, 187 lbs., took second with an 8-7 decision loss to Ayden Sales of Coffeyville followed by  first-period pins of Eureka’s Jackson Hobbs and Chanute’s Elijah Parker respectively. 

Colton Hall, 79 lbs., took third with a first-period pin of Hunter Hurt of Chanute, then fell to Chanute’s Jase Hanson and Parsons’ Gehrig Stenstrom via first period pins.

At 75 lbs., Jyler Granere and Dusty Findley took third and fourth respectively. Findley and Granere both fell in the opening round, then Granere defeated Findley via an 18-4 major decision before both fell in the third round.

Other results: 

Cieson Kidwell, 87 lbs., took fourth with an 8-3 loss to Jude Reinecke of Chanute, then Memphis Lyons of Fort Scott via first-period pin in the second round, then Brooks Brady of Chanute via a 12-2 major decision in the finale. 

Zeth Miller, 131 lbs., took fourth with a loss via a first-period pin to Cole Dauben of Fort Scott, then fell to Koen Seamster of Chanute via a first-period pin, then fell to Hagen Clarenson via a 17-11 decision. 

Matthew Holding, 132 lbs., took fourth with a loss via pin in the second period by Ayden Peyton of Independence, then forfeited to Lucas Jones of Chanute, then forfeited to Marcus Clark of Eureka. 

Evan Boeken, 132 lbs., fell to Moses Durand of Chanute via 7-4 decision, then to Marcus Pearce of Eureka in a first-period pin, then to Dresyen Wilson in a 14-0 major decision.
