Iola sent three freshmen wrestlers to compete in the Anderson County Invitational on Saturday. The Mustang squad consisted of Toby Sander (106 lbs.), CJ Shields (126 lbs.) and Dillon Reiter (152 lbs.). Each came away with at least one win. Both Sander and Shields were competing in their first varsity meet of the season.

Sander finished sixth overall with a record of 1-3, scoring 7 team points.
Round 1 — Jake Stanton of Caney Valley (5-4) won by fall over Sander in 1:48.
Round 2 — Brody White of Jayhawk Linn (10-2) won by fall over Sander in 0:43.
Round 3 — Sander won by fall over Carter Sommer of Anderson County (3-8) in 2:58.
Consolation Bracket —Sander received a bye.
5th Place Match — Evan Flatt of Labette County (4-2) won by fall over Sander in 0:41.
Shields finished sixth overall with a 2-3 record, scoring 9 team points.
Round 1 — Shields won by fall over Blaine Simons of Jayhawk Linn (4-7) in 5:34.
Round 2 — Justice Carpenter of Butler (7-5) won by fall over Shields in 1:04.
Round 3 — Gus Buterakos of Santa Fe Trail (7-6) won by fall over Shields 0:58.
Consolation Bracket – Shields won by fall over Bennie Adarr of Frontenac (0-5) in 2:41.
5th Place Match – Tyler Secrest of Anderson County (6-6) won by fall over Shields in 0:41.
Reiter finished ninth overall with a 3-4 record, scoring 10 team points.
Round 1 – Angel Winstead of Caney Valley (5-5) won by major decision over Reiter 14-6.
Round 2 – Caleb Jeanneret of Santa Fe Trail (9-3) won by fall over Reiter in 3:05.
Round 4 – Reiter won by fall over Connor Sparks of Butler (2-3) in 2:34.
Round 5 – Reiter won by fall over Dylan Ensch of Frontenac (1-4) in 1:44.
Round 6 – Reiter won by medical forfeit over Devin Anderson of Central Heights 2-9.
Iola will host a dual on Thursday where they’ll face Humboldt and Erie.
Humboldt competed in a dual at Fredonia.
Dagen Goodner won with a pin in the first round. Goodner is the fifth ranked wrestler at 182-pounds for class 3A.
Seth Hegwald won with a pin the the second round. David Watts won his match 8-3 and Cheyenne Harris won with a pin in the first round. Reid Barnett, Josh Vanatta and Clay Shannon also wrestled on Friday but lost their matches.
“We wrestled some awfully good kids tonight,” head coach Kent Goodner said. “We wrestled hard and did some of the things that we needed to do.”
The Cubs will compete in a dual at Iola versus the Mustangs and Erie.
