Mustangs win two of three over Anderson Co.

With just a few games left in the regular season, the Iola Middle School Mustangs continue stringing together wins in order to build momentum for the Pioneer League Middle School Basketball Tournament.

With the postseason just around the corner, the Iola Middle School Mustangs are heating up at just the right time.

On Thursday, the Mustangs split in a trio of games against visiting Anderson County Thursday. The IMS eighth-grade varsity won 49-21; the seventh-grade varsity won 40-23, and the combined seventh and eighth-grade JV fell 18-16.

The IMS seventh-grade varsity picked up the first win of the evening following a standout performance by guard Landon Desmarteau, who had a team-leading 18 points. Matthew Holding and Greyson Skahan scored six points each. With the win, the Mustangs improved to 6-4 ahead of Monday’s contest against Wellsville.

The Mustang eighth-graders overcame a slow start to take the game by a 28-point margin of victory. 

The win was a true team effort with nine players scoring. Austin Campbell had a team-leading 12 points. Cade Curry and Milo Franklin were nipping at his heels with Curry posting 11 points and Franklin finishing with nine.

With the win, the Mustangs’ record improved to 6-4.

In JV action, the Mustangs fell 18-16. Evan Boeken was the leading scorer with a pair of buckets while six other players scored a bucket apiece.

The Mustangs return to the hardwood Monday, on the road against Wellsville. The games begin at 5 p.m.
