COLONY — Crest High’s softball team had its hands full Monday against an unbeaten Northeast-Arma squad.

The visiting Vikings erupted for nine runs in the first inning and didn’t look back from there, sweeping their doubleheader, 18-1 and 17-1.

The setbacks drop Crest’s record to 4-10.

“We couldn’t get a handle on anything offensively or defensively at the start,” Lady Lancer head coach Casey Cook said. “In the second game, we started out much better.”

Northeast pitcher Shelby Underwood — “She’s the best pitcher we’ll see all season,” Cook said — kept Crest in check in both games.

The Lady Lancers reached the scoreboard in the first game after Kaylee Allen got on base in the bottom of the third, promptly stole second and third and scored on a passed ball.

Andie Burnett replicated the feat in the second game in the bottom of the second. She was hit by a pitch, moved up on an out, and then forced a throwing error with her aggressiveness on the basepaths, allowing her to score.

Problem was, Northeast already led 7-1.

The Vikings took full control with a 10-run third inning, including a pair of Underwood home runs.

“Andie Burnett’s baserunning lit a fire under our offense,” Cook said. “We needed that, but it wasn’t enough. McKenna Hammond and Kaylee Allen were aggressive and had stolen bases, too.”

Lindsey Godderz handled the pitching duties. She struck out one batter in the first game, and two more in the second.

Crest is back at it next Monday at Oswego.
