OLPE — Taking on yet another team ranked in the top four of Kansas Class 2A, Humboldt High’s Cubs fell hard 55-12 to host Olpe High’s Eagles Friday.
“We were overmatched up front but the kids went out and played hard for four quarters,” said Mike Miller, Cub head coach, after his team dropped to 0-8.
Derrik McCall connected with Hunter Murrow for two first-half touchdowns. The first one was a seven-yard scoring strike in the first quarter. It came after McCall returned a kickoff to inside the 10 yard line.
Olpe led 28-6 at the end of the first quarter. Hunter Murrow hauled in a 55-yard pass from McCall in the second quarter for a touchdown.
“It’s been tough the past few weeks in district play but the boys have given us a great effort the past two weeks. We’ll build on that,” Miller said.
“We play Jayhawk-Linn Thursday and that will be two 0-8 teams getting after it.”
Olpe was up 55-12 at halftime. The game was delayed 30 to 45 minutes in the first half because of lightning.
Hayden Boring had 11 yards on 11 carries. Caleb Vanatta had 10 yards on three carries.
McCall was 4 of 16 for 58 yards. Hunter Murrow had two catches for 62 yards.
Seth Nickell had a fumble recovery for Humboldt.
