Iola Middle School’s eighth-grade and seventh-grade B-teams notched wins at home Thursday against Independence Middle School
The seventh-grade B-team won 14-10 behind Hannah Ingle’s 10 points. Tryia Harvey and Taylor Heslop each had two points.
In the eighth-grade B-team game, the Ponies outlasted Independence 15-11. Lexie Long led the Ponies with five points and Katie Shields added four. Scoring two points each were Emory Driskell, Shelby Reno and Chelsea Lea.
Iola’s A-team basketball squads weren’t as fortunate.
The eighth-grade A-team lost 31-17. Independence used an 11-3 first-quarter run to control the game. Iola trailed 19-7 at halftime.
“We just didn’t have the energy early in this ball game,” said Marty Taylor, IMS head coach. “Katie Shields did a good job coming off the bench.”
Reno paced the Ponies with four points and four rebounds. Emmalee Seabolt pulled down five rebounds.
Jo Lohman, Long and Shields each had three points for Iola. Torrie Lewis and Lea tossed in two points each. Lohman and Lewis each had two rebounds.
In the seventh-grade A-team game, Iola led early but it was tied at 7-all by intermission. Independence outscored Iola 15-6 in the second half for a 22-13 win.
“By far our best effort. The girls have had a good week of practice and it showed,” Taylor said. “They played much better.”
Taylor said Taylor Sell is working hard and getting better every game. Sell had six points and three rebounds.
Elise Wolf had four points. Ingle came off the bench for three points and six rebounds. Makaela Platt grabbed six rebounds and Makayli Cleaver had five rebounds.
Iola travels to Garnett Monday to play Anderson County Junior High.
