Coffeyville Community, ranked number nine in the nation, proved their worth and proved to be too much for the Allen Community College men Saturday afternoon.
Coffeyville’s Eli Alexander and Montel James both made statements early in the game, dominating from underneath. They had key baskets from the center, which opened up an offensive dominance early in the first half against the Red Devils. The score was 14-5 with 12 minutes left in the half.
ACC wasn’t ready to roll over and play dead just yet though.
Tray Fountain and Ben Uno had some key drives for the Red Devils. Uno had two consecutive fast-break drives that resulted in pretty floaters for two. The men edged within five points with just over eight minutes left to play.
The Ravens began to pull away at the end of the first, showing off their impressive speed and power in the paint.
“Coffeyville is a good team, and they had a little bit more intensity,” head coach Andy Shaw said. “We played well for six minutes in the first half, but six minutes of good basketball isn’t going to get the job done.”
Coffeyville’s Alexander began to heat up with a 3-pointer and a three-point play for the end of the first, score 39-21.
Two trips to the line for ACC started off the second half, and a 4-0 run for the Red Devils. The spurt was short-lived
While they suffered a rough defeat, Shaw said he is optimistic about the future of the team and believes they can pull together for the rest of the season. The Red Devils have battled injuries for most of the season, and hope to be healthy soon.
“I don’t know how many games we have been healthy as a team,” Shaw said. “But we are still competing as a team.”
Seth Walden left the game at the end of the second half after being hit in the nose by an opponent. Shaw said he was unsure what happened, or if Walden had indeed broken his nose.
DeAndrae Barnette led the team in scoring with 12, followed by Trey Fountain with eight points. Barnett had eight boards as well.
Shaw said the ACC men have a full week ahead of them, and he hopes they will forget about Saturday’s loss and look forward to playing Labette Community College on Wednesday.
