It was a sloppy game of holding onto the basketball for Allen Community College’s women’s basketball team. The Red Devils lost to Coffeyville 74-51 on Wednesday night.
Allen held a brief lead before trailing the rest of the game.
Erika Essman gave ACC a 5-2 lead with 17:15 left in the first after hitting a 3-pointer. That’s as close as the score would get. The Ravens took a 36-20 lead into halftime.
Essman continued to shoot the ball well from beyond the arc in the second half. She made five more 3-pointers. However, the Red Devils never got back into the game.
Overall, ACC had 27 turnovers. Compared to the Ravens’ 13 turnovers, that totaled an extra 14 possessions for Coffeyville. The Ravens also out-rebounded the Red Devils 43-38, giving Coffeyville another extra five possessions.
Coffeyville used those extra possessions to its advantage, out-shooting Allen by 23 shots. Overall, Allen shot 36 percent to Coffeyville’s 45 percent. It wasn’t a good game for the Red Devils looking at the stats.
But, there was one offensive bright spot.
On sophomore night, sophomore Essman led the Red Devils with 21 points. All of her points came from her six 3-pointers, as well as three free throws
The team’s other sophomore, Kailey Cleaver, also had a solid game. She grabbed six rebounds and had two assists.
“Erika played really well. Kailey played well, too. It might not look like it in the box score, but she played very well defensively,” coach Katie Mahoney said. “They work well together.”
Daria Evans followed Essman with 16 points, while also accounting for all three of Allen’s steals. Haley Wilson scored six points, Ashley Sally added four, Ashley Washington scored two and Rachael Bruce had two.
The team will have at least one more game, hosting a playoff game on Saturday against Pratt at a time yet to be determined.
“There was a coin flip between us and Neosho and we won,” Mahoney said. “So, we’ll be at home and play the fifth seed from the west.”
