OVERLAND PARK — The Allen Red Devils softball season came to an end in the semifinals of the Plains District Regional Tournament over the weekend.
After a 7-1 drubbing by Johnson County, Allen rebounded with a 7-2 victory over Cloud Community College, then topped Kansas City Kansas Community College 13-7 before bowing out with a 15-8 loss to Cowley County.
Freshman pitcher Andrea Ruby picked up the victory as the Red Devils staved off elimination against Cloud. She held Cloud scoreless until they picked up a pair of runs in the sixth inning, briefly cutting Allen’s lead to a pair of runs before the Red Devils scored three unanswered runs for a bit of breathing room.
Sophomore outfielder Ella McCammon led Allen in hits while successful in 3 of 4 at-bats, followed by freshman pinch hitter Maea Allen and sophomore catcher Makayla Hirschmann with two hits each.
Freshman second baseman Addie Keys led Allen in RBIs with two, followed by freshman outfielder Harper Desmarteau, sophomore first baseman Kalyse Abernathy and Hischmann with one each.
Allen sophomore pitcher Kirsten Busby came in for the win while relieving Keys after she got in trouble during the KCKCC Blue Devils’ only scoring outburst in the quarterfinals.
Working in front of a strong defense, Busby needed only a single strikeout to hold the Blue Devils to just one run on three hits.
McCammon was clutch again with a team-leading three RBIs.
Allen led in hits while successful in 4 of 5 at-bats. Abernathy, Hirschmann and Allen had two RBIs each. McCammon and Damme had three hits each.
Allen’s luck ran out against Cowley as the Tigers pulled away late in the game with six unanswered runs.
Ruby took the loss with a strikeout while allowing eight runs on six hits and two walks.
Busby did not fare much better while allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks. McCammon ended her career at Allen perfect in the batter’s box while hitting in 4 of 4 at-bats. Allen had a team-leading three RBIs, followed by Walker with two.
