After raindrops forced them to postpone the Marmaton Valley Invitational once already, organizers were more than willing to deal with Thursday’s wind and cold.
“You can always put on another jacket,” noted Wildcat golf coach Mike McEwan. “But you can’t keep it from raining.”
The winds had an effect on golf scores throughout the day at Iola’s Cedarbrook Golf Course, host site for the tournament. Two Oswego golfers, Shawn Riley and Travis Schenker, tied for the low round at 87. Riley took first via a scorecard playoff.
“The scores were a little high, but I imagine a lot of that had to do with the weather,” McEwan said. “And this is just a tough course.”
Humboldt High’s Robbie Sellman was one strike behind in third at 88.
Among the other golfers, Yates Center’s Remi Wagner earned his first ever varsity medal by placing ninth with a 97. Joe Jefferis had Marmaton Valley’s low round of the day, finishing 15th with a 98.
Oswego also ran away with the team title, with a four-man score of 366, well ahead of Jayhawk-Linn’s 392.
None of the area schools, Marmaton Valley, Humboldt or Yates Center, had enough golfers to qualify for the team competition.
For the host Wildcats, Lane Hamm shot a 100 to finish 18th. Mike Swift was 25th at 114.
Nick Schemper of Yates Center, a three time state qualifier, struggled to finish 26th at 115. Jon Barnes carded a 122 to finish 32nd.
“This course has fairways that are more narrow than we are used to, and there are lots of trees,” Yates Center head coach Kevin Barnes said. “Remi had a great round. Jon did drop his score from the Fredonia meet, and shot a 55 on the back nine. Nick just had one of those days, and is looking forward to doing better next week.”
Humboldt’s Conner Roseberry shot a 127 to finish 34th.
