A quick thought entered, then quickly exited, C.L. Fulton’s mind while en route to a trap shoot in Missouri.
“I’d never won a buckle before,” he noted. “I thought it’d be neat if I could win one.”
He did it three times at the Missouri Fall Championship Shoot at Linn Creek, near Camdenton, Mo.
There, Fulton won three events. The Fall Handicap Championship Shoot and his individual yardage group. He also had the highest all-around score in B Class.
He won belt buckles for all three.
Fulton had already headed home from Missouri Sunday when he also was named the recipient of the Andy Johnson Trophy for his shooting prowess, “although I’m not exactly sure what it’s for,” he joked.
With the gleaming hardware came his grand prize, a Browning XT shotgun.
Fulton’s hardware came from hitting 99 out of 100 clay targets on the day from 22 yards, the only one of 568 registered shooters from across North America to hit that many.
The competition featured shooters from as far away as Canada and Pennsylvania
Fulton, 40, is in his first year of registered trap shooting.
“I’ve done outlaw trap shooting for the past 15 years,” he said. “A few people have told me I’d be good enough to compete at registered events.”
Fulton began entering registered events in May.
He hit 100 straight traps at an event in Lawrence. He broke 98 of 100 traps at the Kansas State Shot to win his class.
“I’ve got several more events coming up,” he said.
Fulton works as a service technician at Flynn Appliance in Iola.
