HUMBOLDT — What Mother Nature giveth, Mother Nature taketh away.
Humboldt Speedway opened, as planned, Friday evening for its annual Spring Fling at the Bullring race extravaganza, featuring the USMTS modified racing series.
An added night of racing, however, planned for Saturday was canceled because of rainy weather. The extra day was added at the last minute because USMTS races planned that night in Kansas City were called off because of snow.
That did little to dampen the enthusiasm locally of the filled grandstands for Friday’s festivities. Fifty-six modified races, another 39 B-modified cars and a host of pure stock racers filled the night’s agenda.
Stormy Scott, the defending King of America winner at Humboldt, led the 40-lap USMTS A feature across the finish line to take the win. He was followed by second-place finisher Ryan Gustin, Marshalltown, Iowa; Watts, Okla., driver Jason Hughes in third; Manhattan’s Chase Junghans in fourth, and Fertile, Iowa, driver Kelly Shryock in fifth.
Kris Jackson, Lebanon, Mo., won the B-Mod feature, followed by Steve Mullenburg, Sparta, Mo.; Merriam’s Steve Goodman in third, Parsons driver Jeremy Chambes in fourth and Colby driver Dustin Daniels in fifth.
Chanute’s Derrek Wilson won the pure stock feature. Jeremy Willard claimed second, followed by Jeremy Bennett in third, Kyle Roland in fourth and Ryan Smith in fifth.
The first points night of 2013 returns this Friday before the USMTS cars return to Humboldt March 21-23 for the third annual King of America races. More than 120 modified drivers have entered already. Track officials expect up to 200 cars in all classes for the three-night event.
