CANEY — Uniontown High’s Sabrena McAnulty had the comfort of teammates when she competed at the 2009 Kansas Class 3-2-1A Girls’ State Golf Tournament.
McAnulty, a junior, was the lone Uniontown golfer to qualify for the 2010 state tournament. But she won’t be lonely as two Yates Center High golfers — Emily Baker and Margie Hartwig — made the cut for the state tournament also.
The Eagles and the Wildcats competed in Monday’s 2010 Kansas Class 3-2-1A Regional Golf Tournament hosted by Caney Valley High School. The top three teams qualify for state tournament action. Also going are the next five lowest individuals not on qualifying teams.
Yates Center finished fourth as a team, combining for a 533. Uniontown took fifth with a 575. So going as a team was out for both.
Baker, a sophomore, qualified for her second straight state golf tournament taking eighth overall. Hartwig, a senior, placed ninth qualifying for her first state tournament.
Baker and Hartwig each shot a 113 for the 18-hole regional tournament as did Fredonia’s Lindsey O’Neal. Fredonia was a distant second to Caney Valley in the team standings.
Caney Valley posted a 427 to win the regional championship, placing four golfers in the top six places. Fredonia had a 459 team score and Galena was third at 505.
Maggie Sloan of Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan was the regional champion with an 84. Tres Short of Fredonia was second with an 87.
McAnulty shot a 132 and was the fifth non-qualifying team player. Uniontown’s Emily Simpson and Veronica Harrison each shot a 133.
“Our girls did a really good job,” said Jason Tourtillott, Uniontown golf coach. “There was a hole over the water that gave our girls problems and in reality kept two from going to state.
“Sabrena played well. I think the other girls will take something from this and come back next year with a better understanding of how every stroke counts.”
The three area golfers go to the 2010 Kansas Class 3-2-1A State Golf Tournament next Monday in Great Bend. The 18-hole event will be played on the Stoneridge Golf Club course.
Baker tied for 51st in last year’s state tournament. McAnulty shot a 156 a year ago.
Other area regional scores were: McKenna Furst, Yates Center, 147; Sami Hatch, Yates Center, 160; Becky Wendland, Yates Center, 172; Raven Lamb, Uniontown, 177; Danica Herring, Uniontown, 181.
