BURLINGTON — How good was the competition at the Burlington High Invitational track meet Tuesday?
Yates Center High’s athletes turned in four personal-best performances and did not place in those events.
“This was a high quality meet and our kids competed well in both divisions,” said Dan Berg, YCHS head track coach. “We’re proud of the kids for hanging in there and competing. We were the only 1A school in attendance.”
Dylan Sicka ran a season-best 4 minutes, 40.67 seconds to win the boys’ 1600-meter run. Sicka was second in the 800-meter run in 2:04.
Going up against a field in the 110-meter high hurdles with two state champions, Donnie Bennett finished fifth in 16.2 seconds. Sam Aguirre ran a personal-best 18.5 seconds in the preliminaries and did not make the finals.
Bennett finished second in the 300-meter intermeidate hurdles, which also had a state champion competitor in the race. Bennett’s time was 41.2 seconds.
Aguirre had a personal-best time of 56.6 seconds in the 400-meter dash but did not place. Brent Rice had a personal-best leap of 34 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump and didn’t score points.
Bennett took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 20’1”. C.J. Stiffler threw a personal-best 108’3” but did not place in the javelin.
“It was good to have Brae (Adams) back in the discus against a tough field,” Berg said of the Wildcat girls. “Cherokee (Shaffer) competed well in the high jump.”
Adams finished third in the discus with a throw of 112 feet. Shaffer took fourth in the high jump, clearing 4’8”.
Yates Center goes to Cherryvale Thursday. In a week from Thursday, the Wildcat athletes will be back at Burlington for the Tri-Valley League meet.
