FREDONIA — Don’t tell Yates Center High’s athletes about being the smallest school in the Tri-Valley League.
Despite fewer numbers than their fellow competitors, the Wildcat boys picked up second place in Thursday’s TVL meet, hosted by Fredonia High School. The Wildcat girls, meanwhile, took third, despite entering only seven athletes.
Humboldt High’s athletes also raked in some heavy hardware. The Humboldt boys took third in what is supposed to be a “rebuilding” season.
The Yates Center teams are meeting head coach Dan Berg’s goal of ending the season on a high note.
“I really can’t say enough about how our boys accomplished this goal” of taking second, Berg said. “We thought going in we had a shot at second because Caney was way too powerful to beat.
“We are proud of our league championship, and especially proud of how we scored.”
The Wildcat boys’ 4×800-meter relay team of Brett Holloway, Mikey Bruner, Hayden Splechter and Drake Busteed ran a season-best time in winning gold. Holloway also won the 3200 meters, Busteed was victorious in the 800 meters, and Kal Hamm was golden in the high jump.
On the girls’ side, Ashley Pringle’s personal-best leap in the triple jump netted her a gold medal in the process. Mindi Holloway took gold in the 800 meters.
“Rylie (Albert) had a great day in the sprints, Mindi in her jumps and hurdles and 800, and Katelyn (Hatch) has come in strong in the 300 hurdles,” Berg said. “Ashley (Pringle) had a strong 400 meters, too. We are proud of our throwers, who got us off to a great start.”
HUMBOLDT’S athletes also had strong days. Ethan Bartlett won the boys’ 400 meters, while the Cubs’ 4×400 relay team also took the win. Justin Meins took silver in the 300-meter hurdles, while Bryce Isaac claimed silver in the long jump and bronze in the triple jump.
