BUFFALO — It was a case of success deferred.
Yates Center High’s track athletes, denied an opportunity to participate in the Altoona-Midway Invitational earlier this year because of weather, came out with a vengeance Tuesday in the rescheduled competitions.
The Wildcat thinclads racked up 18 gold medals in winning both the boys and girls divisions.
“We are extremely proud of everyone’s efforts,” Wildcat head coach Dan Berg said.
One such example came from Austin McNett, who claimed second place in the 200-meter dash, and had all of about two minutes worth of rest before he was summoned for the start of the boys 4×400-meter relay.
With his start, Yates Center was able to capture first in the relay as well.
“We are very happy to have won so many events and to have so many kids win medals,” Berg said. “I’m very proud of MaKayla Jones with her first high school gold medal. Brett Holloway ran a good 3200 for the first time this year, and Drake Busteed ran very good races in the 1600 and 800.”
Yates Center also entered a relay team featuring the squad’s throwers. Drew Pringle, Makayla Bishop, Jones and Mason Hartwig teamed up to claim third.
The Wildcat boys won the team competition with 157 points. The Wildcat girls scored 168.
