Cubs, Lady Cubs succeed in Fredonia

Hot off a successful run at the Tri-Valley League Tournament last week, the Humboldt Cubs and Lady Cubs kept their momentum going by earning medals at Monday's Fredonia Invitational.

FREDONIA — Multiple Cubs and Lady Cubs wrestlers won gold medals at the Fredonia Junior High School Invitational Monday.

Zaden Mellen, Marcus Whitecomb, Lincoln Gwillim, Jaxon Gillespie and Case Schomaker posted first-place finishes for the Cubs while Kenady Lucke, Hadlee Allen and Mylan Sterling took first for the Lady Cubs.

At 96 lbs., Mellen took first in a three-person round robin after defeating Jacob Holt of Cherryvale via pin, then Trapper Kent of Bluestem via 18-1 technical fall. Marcus Whitcomb, 128 Ibs., secured gold with a second-period pin of Alex Davis of Cherryvale and a first-period pin of Wyatt Edmonds of Caney Valley.

Just one weight class higher at 135 lbs., Lincoln Gwillim won gold with a second-period pin of Jaxon Atherton of Bluestem and 10-7 decision over Syler Eaton of Fredonia.

In less than a minute, Jaxon Gillespie, 139 lbs., had a pin of Bluestem’s Noah Queen. Gillespie then took less than 3 minutes to pin Shaiden Allen of Neodesha after putting Allen on his back in the second period, to win gold.

At 142 lbs., Case Schomaker had a first period pin against Michael Ellington of Bluestem, then pinned Jacob Graham of Galesburg in the second period to take first.

Lady Cubs

Kenady Lucke,108 lbs., picked up her second consecutive gold medal after securing a first-period pin of Neveah Fox of Fredonia, then taking Cheyenne Brooks to the second period before picking up the pin. 

Hadlee Allen, 115 lbs., took first with an eye-popping 13-0 major decision victory over Sophia Coover of Galesburg. After getting a bye, Allen handily defeated Chioyoko Millison of Neodesha via first-period pin.

Mylan Sterling, 120 lbs., spent less than 5 minutes on the mat with a second period pin of Meikenna Rienhart of Fredonia. Sterling then pinned Emily Agee of Galesburg in the first period at the 1:26-mark for first place.

Complete results as follows:

Boys: At 155 lbs., Izaac Cruse fell to Lane Novotney of Cherryvale via first-period pin but rebounded for a victory via first-period pin over Luke Oltman of Bluestem. Kamrin Wooden, 177 lbs., took second when he fell to Kale Claus of Neodesha in a first period pin, then secured second place with a second-period pin of Josh Francisco of Caney Valley.

Dakota Haiglar, 143 lbs., took third. Haiglar had two first-period losses via pins from Jaxson Cook of Cherryvale and Easton Randall of Caney Valley..

Girls: Azahlynn Wilkerson, 91 lbs., took second after falling via a second-period pin by Tyler Arnold of Bluestem but rebounding in the finale with a first-period pin of Caney Valley’s Jentry Stallsmith. Taylin Yelm, 97 lbs., took second with a first-period pin of Cherryvale’s Emma Martin and a loss to Brooke Reyes of Neodesha via a first-period pin. 

Tailynn Reddick, 122 lbs., took second with a victorious 7-0 decision over Patricia Sexton of Galesburg, followed by a loss to Layla Lamendola of Neodesha with a first-period pin. Morgan Hencey, 167 lbs., took second with a loss via a first-period pin to Kynzie Garner of Bluestem followed by a successful first-period pin of Blaine Martin of Caney Valley.

Peyton Weilert, 100 lbs., took third. Weilert had a 15-0 technical fall loss to Karter Strathe of Galesburg and then fell to Brooklyn Loader of Caney Valley via first-period pin.
