LA CYGNE — Humboldt’s varsity volleyball team started the season at a tournament in Prairie View Saturday. The Lady Cubs took third place in its pool after ending up in a three-way tie.
In Humboldt’s first match, the team defeated Prairie View in straight sets. Breanna Kline led the way with eight kills, with .235 kill average. Annalise Whitcomb had 11 assists. Delaney Umholtz added two kills. Sydney Houk and Brook Turner each had a kill.
“It took awhile to kick off the dust against Prairie View, but you could see our confidence grow as the match went on,” coach Stephanie Splechter said.
Rossville gave the Lady Cubs some trouble in the second match, forcing three sets. Humboldt, however, was able to win the tiebreaker. Houk had six kills, Kline added nine more, while Turner, Tiler Wells and Umholtz had two kills apiece. Whitcomb had 19 assists and Kline had three.
Wellsville defeated Humboldt in two sets in the next match. Umholtz led Humboldt with four digs, Wells had three. Kline had six kills to lead the way. Turner wasn’t far behind with three of her own.
“Wellsville is a very good team and ended up winning the tournament,” Splechter said. “We missed eight serves and that was the difference in the match.”
The Lady Cubs lost the final match, 2-1, against Burlington. Whitcomb had 20 assists, Umholtz had 10 digs and Kline had 13 kills to each lead the team.
“The Burlington match was a tough loss,” Splechter said. “I think we ran out of gas.”
