Iola Middle School’s golf team finished the 2010 season just like it started — with a win.
The Ponies took full advantage of a picture-perfect spring day on the Cedarbrook Golf Course Monday to win their own tournament. The IMS Invitational, which was halted by rain on April 7, was replayed Monday.
Iola put together a team score of 176 for the nine-hole event. Independence was a distant second at 200 followed by Pittsburg with a 204.
Jayhawk-Linn was fourth at 212 and Anderson County had a 214. Chanute was sixth with 218 followed by Parsons with 219 and Coffeyville had a 240.
“This group of golfers was a thrill to coach,” said Dennis Nevin, IMS golf coach. “They love to play and they practice all the time.”
Kaden Macha led the Ponies with a 39, winning the individual title by one stroke over Spencer Walter of Anderson County. Gilvon Darkis, Parsons, shot a 42 for third.
Isaiah Grover carded a 44 for fourth and Shane Walden had a 45 for fifth. Iola teammate Matt Jacobs finished with a 48, tying for ninth with Reece Dawson of Jayhawk-Linn.
There was a three-way tie for sixth place with Calvin Hugo, Independence, Kevin Barker, Pittsburg and Lake Lund of Chanute each hitting a 47.
Iola’s Adam Peterson had a 48 and Weston Hines had a 50.
Katie Shields of Iola placed fourth in the girls’ division with a 63.
Other members of the IMS team this season were Drake Dieker, who had hip surgery after the second tournament of the season, Wyatt Hines, Trey Wilson, Austin Snyder, Josh Elker, Andrew Waldman, Jessica Adams, Brecken Collins and Colten Storrer.
Iola won seven of eight tournaments this season. The Ponies won the Southeast Kansas League traveling trophy.
