Pony JV gets win over Santa Fe Trail while varsity falls

The Iola Middle School girls took on Santa Fe Trail on Monday. Both Pony varsity teams fell while the junior varsity prevailed.
The seventh-grade varsity fell 14-18.
Both teams went tit-for-tat through the first two quarters and were all tied up at eight going into halftime. That’s when the Chargers started to pull away outscoring the Ponies by two in both the third and fourth innings to seal the victory. 
Offensively, it was a one-girl effort. Asha Houk scored all 14 of Iola’s points. She also led the team with five rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Carly Dreher, Dallyn McGraw, Jadyn Kauffman and Crystal Lindsey each had two rebounds.
A strong defensive first half boosted the seventh-grade junior varsity 11-4 over Santa Fe Trail.
The Ponies led five nothing going into halftime and 11-2 after the third quarter. Iola didn’t score in the fourth but held the Chargers to just two points to get the win.
Dreher and Celina Caron led the Ponies in scoring with four points each while Louise Caron had two and McGraw had one.
Louise Caron and Dreher had three rebounds while Caiden Cloud had three steals and McGraw and Celina Caron each had two steals. McGraw had three blocks and Cloud had two.
The eighth-grade varsity fell in a higher scoring affair, 36-21.
Reece Murray had a team-high 10 points while Maci Miller had five. Josie Plumlee, Jenna Curry and Hannah Hall each scored two.
Chloe Sell and Curry led the way with three rebounds while Ally Ellis had a team-high four steals. Curry also had a team-high two blocks.
Lastly, the eighth-grade junior varsity got a 16-12 win thanks to a strong defensive effort in the last three quarters.
After ending the first quarter tied up at six, Iola held the Chargers to just two points per quarter for the rest of the game.
Maci Miller had a team-high six points while Triniti Loveall had four. Miah Shelby, Hall and Rhegan Fischer each had two points.
Loveall had a team-high six rebounds, three steals and a block.
The Ponies will face Anderson County to finish up a three-game road stand on Thursday starting at 4 p.m.
