UNIONTOWN — Marmaton Valley Junior High’s volleyball team exemplified teamwork Saturday in winning the Uniontown Invitational Tournament.
The Wildcats went 3-0 on the day, defeating Fort Scott, 16-14, 15-0; host Uniontown, 16-14, 15-7; and Jayhawk-Linn in the championship match, 14-16, 15-9, 15-7.
“I can’t say enough about the girls,” head coach Brenda Mills said. “It was an all-around team effort. The girls did a great job of setting each other up and making the right hits. We had to come from behind a couple of times, but that makes it even better, when you’re able to fall behind and still come back and win.”
Among the highlights:
Trinitee Gutierrez served all 15 points in the win over Fort Scott, even after Fort Scott coaches called timeouts and tried other tactics to disrupt her concentration, Mills said.
“They came over and complimented her after the match,” Mills said. “It was a neat moment.”
In the championship match against the Jayhawks, Marmaton Valley’s Megan Ensminger went to the service line with the Wildcats trailing 7-5. She proceeded to serve the last 10 points in a row to get the win.
“These girls can’t do it by themselves,” Mills said. “They work very well together.”
Gutierrez led the way with 32 points on the day, followed by Ensminger with 15, Shayla Brooks with 10 and Paige Becker with eight.
