Crest, Yates Center clash in TRL battle

A pair of local teams battle for position in the Three Rivers League standings during Tuesday's triangular at Crest High School.

The Yates Center Wildcats remain undefeated in the Three Rivers League after sweeping Crest and Pleasanton during Tuesday’s triangular.

After opening the tournament with a 25-14, 25-17 victory over the Pleasanton Blu-Jays (4-7, 3-6), the Wildcats next turned their attention to the Crest Lady Lancers (4-6, 3-1) for a 25-15, 25-19 sweep. The Wildcats improve to 6-0 in the TRL and 12-3 overall.

Against Pleasanton, senior outside hitter Kinley Morrison had a team-leading seven kills, followed closely by junior middle blocker Cayten Cummings with six. Senior outside hitter Wylee Shaffer had a team-leading three aces while Cummings, junior outside hitter Mylin Tidd, Morrison and senior setter Madison Hall all had two aces each.

Defensively, Cummings had a team-leading six digs, followed by Tidd and Shaffer with five each. Shaffer and Morrison tied for the team lead in blocks with one each.

Cummings had the hot hand against Crest, registering 11 kills, seven more than her closest teammate in Shaffer. Tidd led the team lead with four aces to Cumming’s three. Shaffer had the team lead in digs with eight, as Morrison, Cummings and Hall finished with seven, six and five respectively. Morrison registered the Wildcats only block against Crest.

Despite opening the evening with a defeat, the Lady Lancers had a productive night. 

Crest defeated the Blu-Jays in straight sets 25-19 and 25-13. The Lady Lancers and Wildcats may meet again this weekend. Both squads are scheduled to appear at the Humboldt Invitational. First serve is slated for 8:30 a.m.
